Natural tapestry

There seems to be a suggestion of tapestry design in this image of lichen photographed on a rock on St Agnes in the Isles of Scilly.  The natural pattern is recorded as found.  The only licence taken has been the removal of the texture of the granite rock to reveal the pattern more clearly..

Lichen on the rocks

I was attracted by the rich colours and fascinating textures of this patch of lichen on a granite outcrop.  There is a hint of a strange landscape, perhaps on another planet!

On a Tresco stone wall

On Tresco (one of the Isles of Scilly) the air is so pure and the mild climate so conducive to growth that lichen and plants root themselves quite happily in the dry stone walls.

Rooftop in Rye

Patterns, patterns everywhere.  As we relaxed over a cup of coffee I was attracted by the lichen and moss on the old, weathered tiled roof on the opposite side of the street.  If a roof can be said to have character, here was a perfect example!

Lichen

As moths are attracted to a lamp in the evening, so photographers are often attracted to lichen.  Why, then, another lichen photo?  Simply because I like it  –  and I offer no apology!  I am fascinated by the shapes, the colours, the mosaic-like natural patterning, the textures etc.  It is just a very pleasing subject.

The picture on the wall

At the end of my garden is a dry stone wall.  It is home to a wide variety of lichen that combine to form fascinating, and often quite beautiful, patterns.

Bark pattern

I shot this photo because I liked so much the textures and pattern, but I would love to be able to name the component elements, such as the types of lichen, the black dots, the pale grey etc.
