On a Tresco stone wall

On Tresco (one of the Isles of Scilly) the air is so pure and the mild climate so conducive to growth that lichen and plants root themselves quite happily in the dry stone walls.

The Blue Lagoon

Around the headland from Porthgain, at Abereiddy, is a breached quarry in which a lagoon has formed.  The surrounding slate gives the water a rich blue/green colour  –  hence its name, the Blue Lagoon.

Despite the numerous Danger warnings, intrepid teenagers are prepared to risk life and limb as they jump and dive from the remains of the disused quarry structures into the deep waters.

 

 

The Lagoon is also popular with coasteering groups.  Coasteering involves traversing a rocky coast using a mixture of rock climbing, cliff jumping, swimming, scrambling and any other means of movement but without the aid of ropes.  In the picture below a group are just setting out under the guidance of an experienced leader.

Decision time

It’s migration time and the local church tower seems to be a meeting point for a large flock of birds  –  the picture shows only a few.  Perhaps they are checking their orientation?  Or maybe seeking Divine guidance!  We wish them a safe journey

 

 

On reflection …..

I was attracted by the ‘abstract paintings’ created by the reflections in the windows of this old building on the quayside at Porthgain.

 

 

 

Porthgain

Porthgain is a small, attractive harbour on the St David’s Peninsula in Pembrokeshire.  Used mostly by local fishermen, it is popular with both holiday makers and boaters during the summer months.

It is difficult to believe that as recently as 1930 it was a prosperous industrial harbour exporting slate from nearby quarries and, later, crushed dolerite for roadstone.  The stone was stored in the large brick hoppers shown below.  The hoppers are now listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
