I was attracted by the contrasts between the grasses and the ferns – the juxtaposed shapes, textures, patterns and the freshness of the different shades of green.

I’m intrigued by my own reaction to the black background as it seems to emphasise the freshness and vitality of the lush growth. I can’t help feeling that a white/pale background would have felt clinical rather than exuberant …
The actual background for this image was extremely busy and messy and detracted from the point I wanted to make. I think you’re right – white would be too ‘clinical’ and would not provide a strong enough contrast with the fairy grasses.
